The Worm, Elbows, and The Texas Tornado
Nicknames and badass heroes go together like peanut butter and jelly! Maverick and Goose, Smokey and the Bandit, The Intimidator. Going fast is basically illegal without the combination of a bushy mustache and a peer bestowed nickname. Motorcycle racing is no exception with generations of men pushing the boundaries of speed and earning their lifelong titles along the way. Below I highlight 3 of my favorites. The Worm, Elbows, and The Texas Tornado.
Larry “The Worm” Pegram
Larry Pegram, known as “The Worm,” earned his nickname early in his racing career. Known for his ability to wriggle through tight gaps like a worm through dirt, Pegram’s style was forged on the dirt ovals of American Flat Track and the twisting tarmac of the AMA Superbike championship. His fearless and unconventional lines through corners set him apart earning him this unique title.
Ben “Elbows” Spies
Ben Spies’ unorthodox riding style earned him the nickname “Elbows”. His posture being very distinct, Spies' elbows could be seen sticking out as he wrestled his motorcycle through corners, a style that became his signature. His aggressive stance achieved numerous victories, leading to three AMA Superbike Championships and a World Superbike Championship.
Colin “The Texas Tornado” Edwards
Colin Edwards, known as “The Texas Tornado,” is celebrated for his classic American style. A tall and lanky cowboy from Texas, Edwards brought that wild west intensity to every race. His passion and pursuit of victory earned him this fitting nickname. Throughout his career, Edwards achieved notable success, including two World Superbike Championships. His nickname not only reflects his origins but also his American grit, solidifying Edward’s as a American staple in the road racing world championships.
